Tumblr user Swiked shared a photo of a dark blue ribbed dress adorned with grey lace. Besides, not since Lo’s infamous light green Versace dress from 2000 Grammys has there been this much chatter over one trifling little garment. Did you hear of something like that before? Friends, lovers, and families were rn apart on Thursday. Not everyone saw it that way, though conforming to a BuzzFeed poll, more than two those thirds who looked at picture thought dress was almost white and gold.

Wait. Right! Black and blueish. Now pay attention please. Nonetheless, omg am I dying https.

This is because they have tiny little lenses, which translates to VERY poor light gathering capabilities. ALL of them.

Cell phone manufacturers try to compensate with what we call algorithms, in order to compensate. These are used to take poor, dimly lit pictures and make them into something at least passable. The algorithm likely applied maximum flash and maximum gain to brighten foreground as much as possible. In this case, subject was backlit with bright sunlight, which would normally make subject in foreground appear very dark. Otherwise, subject would just look like a grey silhouette.

The dress itself is satiny.

The algorithm tried to compensate. This means flash would actually be o much and would essentially wash out all color making dress look almost entirely whitish. The colors came out washed out and wrong. The image itself is blackish and blueish, Adobe confirmed it by isolating tocolours.
