Girls looking for a prom dress at the Peninsula Dream Center’s Dream Design event April 15 can expect to get the VIP treatment.

They’ll be paired with a personal stylist to help them choose a dress and accessories, including shoes, jewelry, handbags and more, when they arrive.

While indicating their size, favorite color, preferred dress length and other information, participants have to register online before the event. Each girl will get to bring a guest, and they’ll get to nibble on hors d’oeuvres while they shop.

Whenever offering high school girls facing financial hardship the chance to get outfitted for the prom for free, this is the third year the organization on Harpersville Road in Newport News is hosting the event.

Others in Hampton Roads are offering similar opportunities to girls in need.

We still wanted it to be nice, to have a New feel York shop, an appointment with a stylist to pick just that perfect dress for you, said Wolfe, the center’s director who helped start the event. Other organizations hosting similar events stopped hosting theirs, Wolfe said, when it was launched in 2014. In past each two years, Peninsula Dream Center has helped outfit about 200 girls in formal wear.

The organization is working with local high schools to reach as many girls as possible.

Last year, they reached students at 37 of them, and this year, they hope to serve 300. Peninsula Dream Center still is looking for volunteers for the event and donations of more dresses.

For those who want to start prom dress shopping sooner, there are at least two opportunities coming up this weekend.

Seamstress Sarah Fary will have about 600 dresses on display in her shop at the Village Trade Center at 6549 Main Street.

There also might be a limited number of men’s suits to choose from. However, she received about 40 dresses last year and welcomes donations throughout the year.

As well as alterations by Fary and dry cleaning by Village Dry Cleaners, the formal wear is free. Fary started the program in 2010 and over the years has seen teenagers walk away happy with something nice to wear.

Across the water, Fairy Godmothers of Virginia its hosting a dress sale Friday through Sunday at Norfolk State University’s student center.

The sale is open to high school junior and senior girls going to a prom and will need to present proof of attendance, such as a student ID or a report card. The organization was running the event for seven years after a brief hiatus.

Girls can buy dresses, shoes, jewelry, accessories and more, and all items gonna be between 10, said Wendy Baylor, who runs Fairy Godmothers of Virginia. Fairy Godmothers is looking for volunteers and is accepting dress donations at Zoots Cleaners locations in Hampton Roads. They also may be assisted by a personal stylist.

Prom night, or a ring dance, is a really big night for these girls, Baylor said.

For more information, contact Fary at 804 815 8012. Furthermore, more than 600 dresses and a limited number of men’s suits going to be available at seamstress Sarah Fary’s shop. Have you heard about something like this before? It can be a great deal of relief to find a really pretty dress, to find a dress they can afford.
